In April this year Standby Productions won the bid for a very exciting offshore project.
Due to the nature of the project that we we’re undertaking, health and safety was vital. Which meant a lot of paperwork and we mean a lot.
We drew up call sheets, storyboards, production schedules and anything else you can think of in terms of pre production.
We arrived for our first shoot in Grimsby late one Tuesday in May ready for our very early wake up call to capture the sunrise over the Humber bridge. About 4 hours later our alarms went off at the unspeakable time of 3am and off we went to capture the sunrise. Unfortunately for us when we arrived on the banks of the River Humber to meet the aerial pilots who were flying the drone the weather was less than ideal and instead of watching the sunrise all we saw was some very grey cloud.
We swiftly packed up and made our way to our second location, where we captured aerial shots over the town of Grimsby.
The initial treatment for the film was to follow a wind turbine technician throughout the day as they go about their job. Which is why our next location was the house of engineer Ashley, after shooting at his home he took us to the wind turbine operations base. Unfortunately by this time the wind had gotten too strong to safely launch the drone to capture aerial shots over the operations base. We captured some great interior shots inside the operations base after completing a Health and Safety quiz, rest assured Standby are well up on their health and safety.
After a quick respite over dinner we packed the kit up for a final time and headed back over to Hull to get some glorious evening shots which annoyingly featured a beautiful sunset!
There was only one thing to do. Set our alarms for 3am for a second time and hope for a more impressive sunrise on the second day. We we’re not disappointed! On the second morning the sunrise was spectacular and we got some incredible shots that we can’t wait to share with you.
Once we had the shots over the Humber it was back to Grimsby for the final aerial shots over the operations base and some shots around the famous Grimsby Ice House before we made our way back to Manchester.
Last Wednesday (the 3rd of June) we travelled back to Grimsby for the final two shooting days where this time we were heading offshore to the wind farm itself. Wednesday was spent shooting around the construction base and Grimsby town centre as well as having our offshore induction. In the evening we took a little trip to Cleethorpes as we had seen most of what Grimsby had to offer. We had a post dinner stroll and planking session (see photos) on the beach before heading back to get some further evening shots.
Thursday was the big day, it was time to head offshore. We arrived armed with anti sickness bands which didn’t quite work for everyone! After about an hour and a half of travelling we made it to the wind farm which is a sight like no other. We captured some awesome shots both from the boat and the aerial drone, conditions could not have been more perfect. We witnessed the technicians transferring from the boat to the turbine itself (rather them than us). We eventually made our way back, once back it was time to head back to Manchester as that was a Wrap!
We’re currently in the post production stages of the project and very excited to reveal the finished project which will be coming in the next couple of months.
