The Year of Video Marketing is well underway. There has been a huge spike in interest as companies realise that high quality film content doesn’t cost as much as they might have thought and can help them promote themselves online.

One of the biggest talking points however is Virtual Reality (VR). With big names such as Facebook, Google and Microsoft on board, it might be possible that VR changes the way audiences wish to consume content.

360 film, which would be the perfect content for a VR headset, is already being used on many social platforms and in high budget advertising campaigns. YouTube has a dedicated channel highlighting the best new content, whilst companies such as Disney have used 360 to tease fans on Facebook. Adobe have even announced a new 360 workflow in the next update for Adobe CC, proving there is huge demand for a quick and easy way to develop new content. So films are already out their being created and shared – what’s the sticking point?

VR has already been attempted in the past, with both the VFX-1 and the Nintendo Virtual Boy failing to pick up traction in the mid 90’s. Now that the technology has had a chance to catch up, higher resolution film content is readily available and a more affordable price-tag being advertised that consumers will be convinced to pick it up and give it a go.

With many of the VR headsets coming out later this year it will be interesting to watch and see whether consumers pick up on it and how the industry reacts.

It’s a huge year for the future of film and STANDBY will be keeping our eyes peeled for what audience are demanding and how we can help you provide it.
