More and more these days, companies are producing film content in-house. From a business perspective, this makes sense for several reasons. Producing film content in-house allows complete creative control over the products and work being advertised. Often it can be quick, with the material shot, uploaded and signed off by the relevant people all within the space of a day and, perhaps most importantly, it’s incredibly cheap.
With digital cameras more affordable than ever, there’s nothing stopping someone picking up a Handycam, DSLR or ‘Bridge’ camera on the cheap, or even using an iPhone, and filming quick, free web content about your business.
The issue with this is the quality very often isn’t any good. It’s all well and good having a diverse portfolio of films on your Youtube and other social media channels, but if the content itself isn’t well produced, lacks quality and isn’t engaging or creative, then the viewer (your potential customer) has no incentive to watch anymore than 5 seconds. While the stats about having video content on your website are incredibly impressive, if the film itself is poor quality then it’s unlikely that anyone will take any notice of your work. You should also ask yourself “does this film content represent the business you’ve worked hard to build or the brand you’ve spent months/years crafting?”
Film, like any other piece of branding, should be an extension of a company. Just as a poor website sticks out like a sore thumb in todays market, a poorly made film shot on an iPhone can be just as damaging for a company, making them appear small, amateur and cheap from the outside. The tendency is for it to be dull, information-heavy and lacking any creative edge… is that how you want your company to be represented? (probably not!)
As an award-winning film production company, Standby has years of experience working with clients and agencies of all sizes and often with companies that have never made a film before. Our team is passionate about films and telling stories, and we believe that quality and creativity should be at the heart of everything we do. We work to find out what makes a company’s brand tick, before developing a strong creative concept that tells that story in a fresh, exciting manner, hooking the viewer early and feeding them the information in a way that engages them.
While this may mean that the cost is higher than having an intern film some quick pieces to camera, the long-term benefits are far greater, and we feel the quality of our film productions speak for themselves!
While diving into the world of professional film production may seem daunting at first, we’ve always had fantastic feedback from clients, many of whom were making their first forays into film content. So we recommend using your iPhone to give us a call or drop us an email, rather than using it to create amateur film content. We hope to enjoy working with you soon!
